Deebs Starts His Busy Year with a Remix of Secret Sun's "Feather"

He's still inspired by Blink-182 and Brand New, but then again, who isn't?

"I guess I usually draw inspiration from an emotion, a melody, or a certain mood," says Deebs of his creative process. "I try to convey a feeling and then build around that."

As modest as it may sound, that creative process is one to reckon with and it has certainly paid off as of late. His impressive Songs4UByMe EP was released last year, and his most recent offering is a remix of Montreal act Secret Sun. Ryan Hemsworth added the remix to his BBC Radio 1 Diplo and Friends mix this past Valentine's Day, and THUMP is happy to share the track today.

"I like to send around the music I'm making because it's helpful to get feedback and see what people are into," says Deebs. The track is a simple, bass driven take on the original; reworked in Deebs' typically restless, otherworldly style.

Deebs met Hemsworth several years ago when the two played a show in Toronto. "I was familiar with him and his music and we connected well when we met in person. Working together is super easy, and we're in touch a lot online. Now that we're in the same city, I'm able to see more of him too," he says.

Deebs has been musically inclined for as long as he can remember. He played classical music a young age and later joined bands in high school. His introduction to electronica was a natural progression from an early interest in other genres. "I was listening to groups like Radiohead and Holy Fuck at the time, and they were incorporating a lot of really different, more experimental electronic sounds than I was used to hearing at the time," he says. "I tried similar things by messing around on my computer. I was pretty horrible for the first year or two?it was basically trial and error."

Though he readily admits to playing house and mainstream acts when he first started out, he's since moved away from that style. "I've started to make music that's a little darker. It's not necessarily a sound someone will feel happy partying to. I like to produce at night?I find that's when I get into my creative zone. There are no distractions and I think that probably influences the sound of the music." He does although remain inspired by the same acts he was drawn to during high school, naming Blink-182 and Brand New as big influences. "Even if those inspirations aren't coming through in my music right now," he says.

2015 already has a packed agenda for Deebs. His has new EP Shift set for this year which features vocalist Jarell Perry, a slot at next month's SXSW, tons of new instrumentals, and even some live performances. "I've been DJing for the past couple of years, but I'd definitely like to start playing more live shows this year," he hints. We look forward to it.
