Torontonian Adam Marshall's record label New Kanada is a publishing house for tonal poets interested in the colour, dusk and rapture of sound and rhythm. They are part of a class of labels dedicated to breaking the genre categorizations that seem to stagnate musical innovation. The sounds they promote are alike the dance music you're familiar with, but cannot be held within the same borders. From its adopted home in Berlin, New Kanada has brought together both forward thinking Canadian (Graze, Basic Soul Unit, Maaskant, etc.) and international (Miajica, Ricardo Tobar, etc.) artists. We spoke to Adam Marshall about his imprint, ideas and what you can expect from them in the future.

THUMP: Explain the name.
Adam Marshall: The first time I DJed in Tokyo, I stayed at a place called "Hotel New Kanada." The name stuck.

How would you describe your sound?
Bittersweet, but in a good way.

What is techno? Should we, as listeners, place importance on defining that term and other genre signifiers?
The whole concept of specific genres is slowly breaking down and becoming less and less relevant. They will always be there, but with where things are at now, I think you'd be missing a lot of good music if you only listened to tracks that fit neatly into one specific niche.

What's your favourite label that isn't your own?
There are a lot of really innovative and inspiring labels right now, so it would be hard to choose just one. I like labels that are passionately curated and that have a distinct aesthetic. Current favorites would include Trilogy Tapes, PAN, Sex Tags Mania, Swamp 81 and Ilian Tape. All-time classics would include Basic Channel, Dance Mania, Axis and Disko B.

Which release would you recommend to introduce a new listener to your label?
Basic Soul Unit  – Basic Necessity EP (NK18)

Do listeners choose the music they listen to or do those sounds find them?
Depends on the listener. I think embracing both approaches would be the best call these days. If you're only going to listen to music you know about, you're going to miss a lot of great tracks.

Explain how you think the practices of DJing and composition/production are different.
DJing and live performances are a 'conversation' with the audience, while production is more of a 'statement' to yourself.

How do you choose the artists that you work with?
Fate.

What's the next release on the label?
The new Graze album, Soft Gamma Repeater will be available on November 17th as a limited 3x12".

What sounds or ideas are inspiring for you right now?
Aerogel.
