If you had asked us a few days ago if there was room for another summer festival in Toronto amidst Digital Dreams, VELD, Bestival, and Go HARD, we would have been skeptical. Luminato, Toronto's premier multi-arts festival, has opened up new doors and possibilities to expand the city's experimental arts and music scene with Unsound Music Festival.Originating as a small, underground festival in Krakow, Poland in 2003, Unsound has recently gained international attention for its innovative and experimental musicians, unique venues, and off-the-wall programming with events in New York, London, Adelaide, and this year, Toronto. The two-day event is set to take place at the abandoned Hearn Generating Station in the Port Lands. You may remember this location as the site of our VICE 20 party, but this time around, the historic space will play host to the first-ever public event and a different animal altogether.The event will feature abstract, avant-garde concerts on Friday and a late-night dance party on Saturday. Musicians include Stars of The Lid, Robert Henke (a.k.a. Monolake), Morton Subotnick, and more. A special "Ephemera" project connecting sound and scent will open and close each night—for the uninitiated, we're talking about "perfume art."As the first event of its kind to come to Toronto, we can't wait to check out this pioneering sonic playground.Unsound Toronto at Luminato takes place June 19-20.
