So there we were, four pints deep on a Friday night. We'd come home with a large chicken wrap, a punnet of chips, and the coldest can of carbonated soft drink we've had in a long time. This was the meaning of contentment, all was right with the world. Well, nearly. We still needed something to watch. At that time of night we probably would have settled for Keeping Up Appearances or Bargain-Loving Brits in the Sun, something as easy to swallow as the aforementioned can of fizzy was, something as comforting as chips with a jar of Hellmans slathered atop. Friday night stuff, basically. Post-pub telly. We didn't find it. Instead, we found something better. What we found was BBC4's Daft Punk Unchained.

Directed by Herve Martin-Delpierre, the hour long documentary took us on a whistlestop tour of the careers of Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel D'Homme Christo, from their fresh faced early days up to the Grammy-smashing present, taking in everything from the depressed dogs of "Da Funk" to the proto-EDM spectacle of the Alive tour. Essentially, it was an hour of flashing lights, cool footage and good music—and it flew by. Watching it back, soberly and properly the next day, it was still as exhilarating as it had been when we had garlic sauce dripping down our chins and red cabbage in our laps.

Featuring collaborators—from Nile Rodgers to Todd Edwards via Kanye West and Paul Williams—and fans,

was a testament to the impact two Parisian producers have had on popular culture, on a truly global scale. Most importantly, and this is one of the highest accolades you can afford to a music documentary, it made you want to listen to all the records all over again. The film's available on the BBC iPlayer for the next 27 days, but get all over this tonight: the four pints are optional.
