Thugfucker's BPM Itinerary Includes Cenote Orgies, Life, and Death

As our friend Ewan Pearson so often says, 'Don't forget to go home.'

International party instigators Thugfucker were brought together as part of an outlandish confluence of chance, so it stands to reason that the Greg Oreck and Holmar Filipsson, the gentlemen behind all the thugfuckery, would be, well, outlandish themselves.

When THUMP asked for a bit of a shakedown on the BPM vibe, their response left us in need of a thesaurus, history book, and maybe some alone time. "Vibe actually comes from ancient Latin word 'Vibrus' and usually refers to the ancient practice of drinking too much Elysium at ancient Roman parties and then shaking (or 'vibrating') wildly, almost out of control until collapsing collectively on the ground together – the ancient Roman version of a cuddle puddle," they explain, before adding "This was usually followed by long group baths and, oftentimes, orgies. Not sure if this is what the people you've been talking with are referring to but if you know the right cenote to go to, that seems more or less accurate."

The duo seem to know a whole lot about whatever frisky business may go on in the lesser populated Mexican cenotes around The BPM Festival. They've had a couple years to do their research. "2012 was our first year attending and playing at BPM," they explain. "It was also the year we kept smacking ourselves in the head over and over again muttering "why the hell didn't we do this before?" We have since rectified that error."

All jokes aside, Thugfucker are one of those charmed acts that are able to keep things mellow and overwhelmingly immersive at the same time. Whereas many acts on the deeper side of house are forever swimming against the tide of musical anonymity, Thugfucker demand your attention.

That fact considered, pay attention to their musical itinerary, because you'll wanna know: "This year we're playing at our Life and Death party, as always, but for the first time we're holding it at the amazing Blue Venado. It's going to be going all night and well past sunrise which will give all of us a nice arc of time to tell a proper story with the music. And beyond the Life and Death regulars there's some great guests (Ben UFO, Pachanga Boys & Joy Orbison) who have all been selected for the unique flavors they'll bring to the mix. Really there's nothing like curating a 12 hour party in beautiful location in front of the sea with just the lineup you want. We get goosebumps just thinking about it."

Hold up, though, they're not done yet. "Then (because one is never enough) we'll be playing for the Smoke and Mirrors party curated by our good pal (and Om music founder) Chris Smith. Chris is a longtime veteran of this scene and is both one of the smartest and nicest guys we know all wrapped into one. And he sure as shit knows how to throw a party. He invited us to play alongside a bunch of some really talented friends and it's just the kind of party that embodies the spirit of the festival. We sure are lucky motherfuckers."

While their explanation of BPM's vibe had us already trimming our back hair, they had a couple more words of advice for first time attendees. "It's like the Iditarod of fun. Pace yourself," they explain. "Be sure to swim in the sea and cleanse your aura once in a while. Swim with the turtles but don't sleep with the fishes."

Lastly, they added, "As our friend Ewan Pearson so often says, 'Don't forget to go home'. "
