"The morning after our first gig was the bloodiest day in the history of Nepal," reflects Mitchell Pineo, a Nova Scotian DJ more commonly known as PINEO. "You go from being out with your friends and experiencing a happy joyous time, then there's this immediate switch and you're in a disaster zone."

April 21, 2015, was a day of firsts for Pineo. On his 23rd birthday, the up-and-coming producer left Canada for the first time, boarding a plane to the Himalayan country of Nepal, eager to play his first international show. However, his auspicious trip to Nepal coincided with an earthquake that would leave over 32,000 people dead or injured.

"Our old roommate wanted to have a big shake-up in his life and see things differently, so he went to Nepal for six months and ended up getting pretty close with the promoters there," Pineo tells. "The promoter was like 'yeah, you should bring your DJ friends over for a gig,' and we thought 'wow, what a crazy opportunity that would be.'" But the trip unexpectedly transitioned from an innocent journey to a test of courage and survival — an experience that Pineo recognizes as a time of tremendous personal growth.

"It made us more introspective, stronger willed and a lot more focused," he shares. "Everyday is now a gift to make music and express myself. I want to make the most of my time."

Pineo is a man of his word. With a residency at Pacifico in Halifax; a part-time job as an electronic music production teacher; and a collection of remixes so diverse even Kygo would be impressed, the east coaster is inarguably spreading his musical wealth — a wealth that's rooted in nostalgia for music of the past.

"I've always been a hardcore 90's kid — a sucker for nostalgia. When I was getting into music it wasn't so defined by genres," he explains. "We would just listen to whatever was on the radio, whatever CD we had. I feel like there's such an opportunity in electronic music to go back and explore all these amazing ideas from the past and reinvent them for the new generation that might not be aware of them."

On his Northmix for THUMP, Pineo asks listeners to hop aboard his musical time machine as he adds his personal touch to some of the most celebrated songs of the past few decades. "I want people to put on their headphones and go on a journey," he shares. "The mix takes them through music of the past, music of the present, music that they haven't heard before, music that they've heard before but in a completely different context."

Ranging from producers like Mat Zo and The Prodigy, to old school charmers including Jefferson Airplane and Journey, Pineo's mix, nicknamed "PINEO's Odyssey," caters to eardrums worldwide.

"Half of the mix is my own productions and the other half are remixes," he mentions. "It's borrowing from culture and it's giving back."

With a catastrophic journey behind him, Pineo's on to his next odyssey — a punchy, funky and powerful exploration of past, present and future sounds.
