High Klassified Explains How He Made Montreal One of the Best Places to Party

Fool's Gold Records producer kicks off THUMP Canada's year end "My City" series.

"My City" is THUMP Canada's year-end series where we get tastemakers in five different cities—Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver—to reflect on their 2015 and tell us about the one party, artist, event, etc., that they feel defined their regional scene. To kick things off, we spoke to Fool's Gold Records-signed producer and Snapchat maestro High Klassified (who released a great EP, Kronostasis, last month) about the changing face of Montreal's nightlife and why he throws the best house parties.

The Montreal scene is getting better and better; before, it was teenagers and early twenties, but now I feel like it's more all ages. Last week I was at the SAQ buying a bottle of vodka and I met this 35-year-old guy and he's like, "Are you High Klassified? I fuck with your shit!" I feel like when we talk about Montreal, people recognize we have some good producers here—Kaytranada, Tommy Kruise, Lunice. People know about Montreal and they know Montreal has a good nightlife scene.

I've been doing house parties at my crib and doing like open house and inviting anybody. I did two this year and I'm doing a third one in December. I just have everybody over at my house, and we just party and shit. My mom was out for the weekend and I was bored, so I put it up on Snapchat [@highklassified], I'm having this house party, everybody come over. I actually live in Laval, which is like 25 minutes from Montreal, and I did this guerilla house party and so many people from Montreal drove all the way to Laval just to party. There were like fifteen cabs in front of my house.

There's this group called Planet Giza who plays, they're so versatile at what they do, and Da-P. I break some unreleased shit at home for sure, I have so many unreleased songs, but I don't know when to play them or when to release them. So I put some snippets on Snapchat, I play some at my house parties.

As told to Max Mertens.
