Maya Jane Coles Alter-Ego Nocturnal Sunshine Gets Darkwashed by Curses and Hodgson

The remix EP for her tune "Believe" ft. Chelou is out today.

Maya Jane Coles surprised fans and critics alike last month when reviving her Nocturnal Sunshine alter-ego. While her own creative trajectory has arced further into house over the past couple of years, the Nocturnal Sunshine LP is a return to dark, moody tones wrought through broken beats and a sparse aesthetic.

Even on the excellent record, "Believe," ft Chelou stood out and caught ears worldwide with fatalist lyrics – "I don't believe in anything" – and an understated, techy groove that alludes dubstep rhythms. Released today on Coles' I/AM/ME label, the remix EP comes with two re-works of the tune.

On the remix tip, Coles reached over the pond to one person who appreciates darkness as much as she does, Safer at Night head Curses. His re-work takes the tune into abstract techno territory, with a propulsive beat under whirring sounds and chopped up vocals.

Emerging UK producer Hodgson kept the track on a breakbeat path with his remix, dropping in a stutter-stepped, almost b-more kick rhythm and pulling back the immediacy of Chelou's vocals by slowing them down. The Joker-esque synth-guitar solo is just icing on the dark, dark cake.

The "Believe" remix releases also features the tune "Intergalactic" and is released on Coles' label I/AM/ME. Buy it on iTunes.
