UK techno icon Surgeon is known for breaking rules, whether he's offering up a seated ambient set at Welsh festival Freerotation, or partnering with Lady Gaga opener/collaborator/muse Lady Starlight to deliver sets of blistering techno to audiences ranging from Little Monsters to Berghain bears. The latest project by the occasionally bearded producer from Birmingham is another significant departure from his two-decades of kick drum dominance, released under Surgeon's passport name, Anthony Childs.Dropping this November on the Editions Mego label, Electronic Recordings from Maui Jungle Vol. 1 comes in the form of an 11 track collection of drones and textures recorded in the humid Hawaiian air this past winter. The label calls the release an "exercise in concentration and trance," which is not too surprising considering that the producer has been known to take annual yoga and meditation retreats to the 50th state.Recorded by Childs using the otherworldly modular synth he's been toting to special gigs recently, first cut "All Around And Inside," which dropped late last week, sends tropical hiss crawling up your neck.
