Apple has launched a new music making app on their mobile operating system iOS, called Music Memos. It's designed to be used on the go and capture users' ideas "whenever the inspiration strikes," according to the company's announcement. The app is billed as a pre-DAW (digital audio workstation) sketchpad, where you work out ideas to later expand upon using more functional software like Garageband or Logic Pro.

If you're an iOS user and this strikes you as something you already use the recording application Memos for, that's no accident. Music Memos recognizes that tool's usefulness and builds on it, adding another layer of functionality designed specifically for producing.

As far as recording external (not app-derived) audio goes, Music Memos lets you record uncompressed audio either directly from your iPhone's built-in mic or from a connected microphone. The app works with all instruments according to Apple, but is "optimized" for acoustic guitar and piano.

The app also has a "backing band" feature, which lets you hear "how your music sounds with a realistic virtual drummer and bass player jamming along." Not only do your virtual bandmates know how to change tempo following your lead, they're also adjustable along the parameters of "energy" and "performance."

Music Memos also has a naming, star rating, and tagging system to organize and keep track of your various recordings on the app.
