Spector Talk About Getting the PC Music Treatment from Danny L Harle

The mysterious collective have even sunk into indie clubs now.

The PC Music gang continue their crawl into every facet of pop culture with this brazen remix of UK indie group Spector's "All the Sad Young Men" by "Broken Flowers" producer Danny L Harle. Pitching lead singer Fred Macpherson's vocal into dizzying Todd Edwards territory, this stop-start stomper is set to leave trails of slime round indie clubs the country over.

THUMPHow does it feel, on a fundamental human level, to hear your voice altered in a way? What does it do to a man?
Fred Macpherson: It makes my voice sounds listenable for a change. When we first sent Danny the parts he very politely asked if it was cool to pitch up my vocal and we were like "of course!". No one wants to hear my tenor in the club.

As a band, what's the remix process like? Is it tinged with fear? Hope?
Hah, it's mainly a lot of people saying no, but we've been really lucky with some of ours. Waiting to hear what people do is fucking exciting - when the wetransfer link comes through it's like Christmas morning.

PC Music - a force for good or evil?
"Broken Flowers" is one of our favourite dance tracks of the last few years, so getting a Danny Harle remix is a dream. A lot of people talk about PC Music's production but what I love about their tunes is the emotional impact. Like with so many great artists, what initially seems sardonic often ends up hitting harder than stuff delivered with a straight face.

How did you, all those years ago, hook up with Wolfgang Voigt?
We just emailed him and he was open to the idea from the off. He's an artist working on a much higher level so I never thought he'd be interested in a song as simple as Never Fade Away. But it showed me that just because someone's on the cover of Wire magazine it doesn't mean they're necessarily gonna be snobbish about a pop band they've never heard of. I guess we're all just making music fuelled by our own inspirations, why not cross pollinate?
