Experimental artist Yves Tumor, Philadelphia producer DJ Sega, and ATM co-founders SCRAAATCH will play the first edition of New York's Index festival next month. Designed to celebrate the work of Black and Latinx artists during Black History Month, it will involve music, art, and community engagement. The one-day event will take place at the Knockdown Center in Queens on February 18.

Among the other artists and thinkers booked to participate are Tygapaw, Quay Dash, Bbymutha, BEARCAT, Martine Syms, Yulan Grant (aka SHYBØI) and more. It was co-curated by Brooklyn multimedia artist Richard Kennedy alongside singer and rapper DonChristian, and will feature work ranging from performance and installation to readings and discussion.

Kennedy told THUMP about the impetus to create the event via email. "Index is a necessary festival curated by DonChristian and myself to provide space and encourage the exchange of innovative ideas," he said. "The world consumes Black and Latinx culture at a rapid pace; through this the artists at the center of these pioneering communities get lost and often overlooked. Index is founded in ideas of archiving and will be a living collection of rich culture to both witness and engage."
