The Eerie New Lapalux Video Imagines What Would Happen if You Fell in Love With a Homicidal Car

If Top Gear was like this maybe I'd watch it.

I'm not a big car person myself. Having only really ever driven my parents' Volkswagen Passat Estate to sixth form when I was 18, my potential passion for automobiles was stunted by a vehicle that looked like a decommissioned tank and sounded like Darth Vader fucking a washing machine. I may, however, have been converted by the dreamy, soft-focus visuals that Lapalux has just dropped in support of his new single "Puzzle", featuring Andreya Triana.

Directed by Nick Rutter, the video follows Leon, a mechanophilia – meaning machines get him all hot under the collar. The bewildered mechanic is led astray by a flashy Porsche, down a beautifully realised rabbit-hole of hallucination and horror. The track itself is another delicate success for Lapalux, a stand out from his recent album Lustmore.

Rutter has worked with Lapalux before, and it is easy to see why they have done it again. The sinister after-dark world is perfectly underscored by the clattering neo-soul, so much so the video steps up from providing an excuse to put the song on Youtube and becomes an enveloping ride all of its own.

If Top Gear looked like this maybe I'd watch it.

Lustmore is out now.
