Ulterior Motive are set to make a real statement in drum & bass when their album The Fourth Wall is released via Goldie's essential Metalheadz label on October 6th. The album is a joy, as deftly arranged as it is uncompromising and progressive. It's borne of jungle, for sure, but its 14 tracks come off like a collage on the lengths that broken beat can be taken."As with most producers we are a product of our environment, we both have huge a heritage in coming up through UK dance music culture starting back in our teens listening to hardcore and rave, so it all stems from there," they told THUMP. "Metalheadz is the original blueprint when it comes to drum and bass in our opinion, as a label it's inspired and and cemented so many of the scenes artists and we are proud to be part of that."The label had enough faith in the seasoned producers (having released on THUMP fav Critical and Subtitlles) that they allowed them total freedom to work through the album on their lonesome. In their words: "They gave us a deadline for the album and we didn't send any demos or ideas till the album was written, we're not sure how many other labels give you this freedom on an album project but its nice to know the people behind you back you 100%"We've got the exclusive on album opener "Stay," featuring James Sunderland. Don't let Sunderland's somber croon lull you into a false sense of security, the tune is a jungle dance-floor churner, with all the frenetic percussion and rolling bass you'd expect out of Metalheadz. The duo went out of their comfort zone to find their man for the track. "The link with James came through hours of searching the internet for people to use as vocalists on the album," they explain. "We really wanted to find someone how had never worked on a dance record before, just so we could get that edge on the performance captured."The Fourth Wall is out on October 6th.
