Asquith Gets Weird on a Lobster Theremin Guest Mix

"I don't like to just play one thing."

Lobster Theremin have become a label to watch over recent years, releasing strong material from the likes of Palms Trax, Steve Murphy, Snow Bone, Hedge Maze, and Daze. Hard to peg, they're committed to pushing dancefloor boundaries. The chief theremin stroker is Jimmy Asquith. We asked him to send us in a mix. He obliged.

We chatted to Asquith after his breakfast time set at Brixton-based FOUND festival before he catches a flight to Berlin for a 4am label show, the Lobster Theremin boss and Find Me In The Dark club night founder gives us the lowdown on his exclusive THUMP mix.

"It's a really strange and varied mix of things that I wanted to fuse together. I'm really into ambient at the moment, so that's the first ten minutes, then there's a strange track which goes into grit-beat-house/jungle and comes out again into ambient. Then, there's tougher weirder stuff, a whole section of electro and techno at the end. I wanted to try to knit all these things together cohesively so it made sense to people. Rather than people thinking, 'oh, what are all these genres', it's more like, 'wow, what was all that?!' It reflects my taste generally as well, I don't like to just play one thing."

Influenced by "rough sounding house and techno, and electro", Jimmy Asquith likes to reset before he plays a show. "I usually start my sets with an ambient track to reset the vibe of the room or tent because sometimes people want to clap and appreciate the artist they've watched. You want to start again, for me it's like having acts in a play. You don't just want one long, rolling loop. There's something to be said for silence in a club. People love the chance to throw their passion out, even when the music's not playing. If you can come in with a good track then people just go nuts."
