We Collaborated with Serato and Mad Decent on a Sick Battle Record—Here's Four Color Zack to Prove It

Paul Devro spliced up the L.A. label's entire catalog to pay tribute to classic battle records. And peyote. And pizza.

Battle records haven't necessarily come back in vogue since their heyday in the 90s, but that doesn't mean they aren't interesting. Designed specifically for DJing with scratching and breaks, these turntable tools are something of a forgotten art form. And that was exactly our thinking when we decided to partner with Serato and Mad Decent on Peyote Pizza Braykz, a new battle record from that label's DJ and creative director Paul Devro.

Devro created all five tracks using snippets from Mad Decent's discography, and you can learn more about his process in the video below. "This is based off Dirt Style, Toasted Marshmallow Breaks, and Backsliding Turkey Kuts," he says, referring to the golden era of the battle record. "It's a total honor. I've wanted to do that since I was like sixteen years old."

To celebrate, we also enlisted Mad Decent artist and Thre3style world champion Four Color Zack to try the record out in classic battle fashion—it's pretty amazing to hear it in action, especially in the hands of a seasoned pro like he is. Check that out above, and buy your copy of the record here. We'll also be giving out a few to our readers—so keep an eye on Twitter for that.
