A series of free workshops for LGBTQ+ youth is being offered this month in New York as the city celebrates Pride month and the first-ever Music Month highlighting its diverse music scene.The INTERLUDE+ series is presented by The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center (a.k.a. The Center), and is curated by local art space Offline Projects. Local collectives Discwoman and Mixpak will host lectures, as will XL Recordings A&R Patrick North, Blood Orange's Dev Hynes, and Mixmag. Topics will span the fields of music, art, and entertainment; including cultural diversity, running a label, queer perception, and balancing creativity with positivity.The workshops are open to New York residents ages 13-21, and will take place at The Center over three consecutive Saturdays beginning tomorrow, June 10. A discussion with Patrick North from XL's A&R team on creativity in navigating the music industry, and straddling the line between indie and major labels. 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Mixmag – On Music Publications & Cultural Diversity (Lecture)
Staff from the dance music media giant will discuss efforts to re-shift the focus of their coverage to highlight the roots of electronic music, and the impacts that it has on communities at home and around the world.12:00 noon – 1:30 p.m.
Mixpak – On Indie Labels & Culture (Lecture and Panel)
Celebrating the intersection of Jamaican dancehall and Brooklyn's electronic scene, Mixpak is one of the hottest indie labels in New York City today. Mixpak's founder Dre Skull and label manager Suze Webb will discuss the ins and outs of running a label, finding artists and building their careers, and the music industry in 2017 from an indie perspective.2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Discwoman – On Music and Curation (Lecture and CDJ Workshop)
Emma Burgess-Olson, co-founder of acclaimed New York-based electronic music collective Discwoman, will present a masterclass on live curation on CDJ, a specialized digital music player used by DJs. Participants are encouraged to bring their own headphones and USBs with music for use during a hands-on demonstration.12:00 noon – 1:30 p.m.
Dev Hynes (of Blood Orange) – On Music and Dance (Lecture)
Singer, songwriter, composer, producer and author Dev Hynes will lead a discussion on the balance between creativity and positivity, while finding happiness within music and dance. 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Jules Gimbrone – On Music and Art (Workshop)
Artist and composer Jules Gimbrone will lead the group to create an interactive sound composition that focuses on the power of queer perception. This workshop is presented in coordination with the Rubin Museum of Art's exhibition "The World is Sound," opening June 16, 2017.
