Let This Dark Melody from Malandra Jr. Prepare You for Solomun’s Canadian Tour

In the midst of the 'Four to the Floor' releases, we caught up with the Diynamic label boss to find out the story behind the series.

As a label boss you have the ability to seek out new talents and push their work, but just putting music out does not guarantee the attention of the masses. With such an excessive number of releases each week, sometimes you need to add a little twist, shake up the game. Diynamic, one of the biggest names in dance music, has recently done just that. The Four to the Floor series is halfway through and with another eight tracks to go we have the pleasure of premiering Malandra Jr.'s "Infinity." Dark and melodic, the track is simply brilliant.

With Solomun's upcoming shows in both Montreal (Stereo) and Toronto (CODA) we caught up with the Diynamic label boss to discuss his newest set of releases and the story behind the series

THUMP: Where did the inspiration for the Four to the Floor series come from? Why this unique structure, and what was the process in choosing the artists?
Solomun: I guess it was meant to be. From the hundreds of demos that are constantly reaching us we only chose the best or what we thought would fit best to Diynamic. And at the end we discovered that there were exactly 16 tracks from 16 new artists. And then we came up with the idea of doing a little math and so the Four to the Floor idea was born—that's why we release four EPs with four tracks each.

Sometimes it feels like being a little boy in the toy department, because there is so much great music around and I feel blessed that so many great artists obviously trust in Diynamic and send us their stuff. After a first scan we as a Diynamic family, especially HOSH, Stimming, David August, DJ Phono, Adriatique, Kollektiv Turmstrasse and myself decided should be released. This was quite a complex process, which took us a few weeks.

Do you think the idea could progress into anything further then EPs?
Of course I think that some of the artists can do more on and with Diynamic than only one track. With all of our artists we plan in terms of sustainability so I would be more than happy to welcome new members to the label family. But it takes a while before this can happen after the first release, because we are a big family and new members have to be patient before they can be like full members. Does that sound like Diynamic would be a motorcycle club? Trust me: it's not, but besides the musical talent the character is super important for us, so we always have to take our time before we add new members.

I see that you are coming to Canada, what can we expect? Are we going to be seeing Four to the Floor parties anytime soon?
Actually this is a good idea, to do some proper Four to the Floor parties, thanks for this! I am going to return to CODA in Toronto and to Stereo in Montreal, where I played both venues for the first time earlier this year. I had so much fun that I immediately wanted to return. After a long and wonderful Ibiza season, I am really looking forward to both gigs. The crowd in both clubs were super passionate and was there for the music so it's a big pleasure for me to come back to Canada.
