The Last Record: DJ and Producer Kyle Woods Shares the Last Music He Purchased

The LA producer revealed his eclectic taste for jazz, rap, and Brazilian pop.

Kyle Woods is a composer, producer and DJ based in Los Angeles and affiliated with Solange Knowles' Saint Heron. When he's not providing the soundtrack for the label's popular parties (like this year's New Orleans Jazz Festival takeover), he crafts his own bright and airy music. His latest EP, Yunque, is a concept record about his recent relocation to LA and in tribute to the power of sunlight. "To me, sunlight represents a lot more than just its definition and I felt it made sense to pay tribute to it as well as having it mark this new chapter in my life," Woods told us.

We asked Woods about the last music he downloaded. His selections—ranging from an obscure track by a 70s Brazilian singer to experimental jazz—reveal the eclectic influences in his sound.

1. "Esperar Pra Ver" by Evinha

My friend Kyle Stewart, who I should mention created the Yunque cover art, passed this song my way during the final week of wrapping up the EP and I instantly fell in love with it. I don't really know too much about Evinha other than she's a Brazilian singer from the 70's and DAMN I'M LOOKING AT DISCOGS RIGHT NOW AND HER ALBUM IS SELLING FOR $4K!

2. "Blue Boss" by Sampa The Great & Godriguez

Sampa The Great & Godriguez are my two of my new favorite artists and together they make such an amazing team. All of their releases together so far have been superb and I'm excited to see where their projects lead this next year. "Blue Boss" has such an amazing energy and I was listening to it a lot while working on my EP.

3. "Astral Traveling" by Pharoah Sanders

I recently spiraled down the WhoSample.com-rabbit hole and found myself scrolling around a jungle forum where I came across a thread dedicated to Pharaoh Sanders. Someone posted a YouTube link of "Astral Traveling" and I had that video on loop for about 5 rotations until I bought a digital copy. It's the kind of song that makes me see colors and that's a quality I treasure.
