The group first teased the full-length back in January with a sci-fi-leaning video clip. Days later, the clip was revealed to be a snippet from the music video for album's titular lead single. Last month, they shared another single, "Cloud 9."

Lead singer Jay Kay said in a statement about the project: "The inspiration for Automaton is in recognition of the rise of artificial intelligence and technology in our world today and how we as humans are beginning to forget the more pleasant, simple and eloquent things in life and in our environment including our relationship with one another as human beings."
