Donky Pitch's Starfoxxx Has That Dance-Adjacent Swag

Stream "Bae HD" from his new record, "Baby I'm Off Drugs and I'm Ready to Marry You"

Brighton's Donky Pitch has developed a reputation for releasing left-of-center, dance-adjacent music since they came about in 2009. Recently, Lockah and The Range have been the acts getting attention, but they've received support from the likes of Tokimonsta and Ryan Hemsworth in the past. The label reached over the Atlantic recently to sign Chicago's Starfoxxx (AKA David Beltran). The result is the forthcoming Baby I'm Off Drugs and I'm Ready to Marry You.

The record is wicked, more Animal Collective than David Guetta – but as the track "Bae HD" below suggests, you can definitely get your groove on to these tunes.

Beltran's list of influences is as divergent as the tones on the record: "I ran an illegal DIY venue with my best friends for the past 2 years," he explains. "Artists like Dirty Beaches, Twin Peaks, The Orwells, Sepalcure, Teklife DJs, Prince Rama, Jimmy Whispers, Sister Crystals, all these awesome bands and artists would play our house and I feel like it was a goddamn dream. Just being around that life, in a massive cult-like environment where everyone just created art and hung out, that was like the biggest influence on everything I made. All while that was happening, I was going through some weird emotional phase where I thought I was falling in love with my ex-girlfriend from years ago, so I called the album "Baby I'm Off Drugs and I'm Ready to Marry You." She didn't feel the same way. So yeah, the record all over the place probably because my mind was all over the place."

Donky Pitch's roster is an adventure– most of the acts favor lefty, pseudo lo-fi material. We asked Starfoxxx what ties all the acts together. He responded, "Its a tough question. I wanna say wifi and pirated software. I'm joking, kinda. Everyone on the label is very distinctly their own sound and come from all over the world."

Even though the record made me get my shimmy on, it's definitely more electronic/dance-adjacent than it is dance. Starfoxxx agrees, "I was listening to way too much Oneohtrix (Point Never) and John Maus more than I was listening to 'dance music' this past year. I'll probably never be able to escape the hyper juke rhythms or house beats from my past, it will always leak back into my writing, but I'm not consciously thinking about genres too much these days."

The record comes out on August 18. Get on that. We've heard the whole thing and it's top notch.
