Amazon Is Giving Away Two Records an Hour In Move Towards Ousting Independent Vinyl Retailers

This follows their exclusive vinyl reissues and their buy-two-get-one-free deal.

After vinyl went out of fashion in the mainstream music world, selling it was the purview of independent retailers and specialized shops. We are currently in the moment of what some are calling a vinyl explosion, though, so the mega-retailer Amazon has decided recently to switch its game up and attack the market, hard.

Back in October, Amazon launched a 13 day vinyl giveaway celebrating the occasion of their newly redesigned online vinyl marketplace. Previously to that, they exclusively reissued the soundtracks to Dirty Dancing, The Goonies, Footloose, Rocky IV and Top Gun on vinyl, and during the summer they offered a buy-two-get-one-free deal.

Now, on December 15, Amazon will be giving away a free vinyl record from noon to 1 a.m. E.T. the following day. (The awkwardness of those times is explained by the fact that the company is based in Seattle and is doing this on Pacific Time, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.) The previous day they'll be giving away their Amazon Echo sound device, and the following day they will be giving away a Crosley C100 Turntable and The Beatles' 1 on vinyl.

All this week they will be giving away signed memorabilia, ranging from One Direction autographed CDs to Lana Del Rey autographed vinyl; see the full list of giveaways here.

Thanks to The Vinyl Factory for the tip.
