Around The World In 80 Raves: Halfway Crooks, Sydney

An Australian hip-hop party defying everything about what it means to be an Australian hip-hop party.

Around The World in 80 Raves takes you into the basements, warehouses, and back rooms where the magic happens—from Caracas to Calgary and back. Photos courtesy of Halfway Crooks.

VIBE: "A rap party for party people."

WHATS THE DEAL THO: Not a lot of guarantees here, but you can be sure that if Petey Pablo's "Raise Up" comes on, the crowd will soon be shirtless. Moving away from the stereotype of hip-hop parties as places full of boring "headnoddery," Halfway Crooks is a room full of Australians bumping jams from the East Coast, West Coast, and Dirty South (of America, obviously).

All the favorites are present, including Juicy J, Dipset, DJ Mustard, Hot Boys, and Gucci Mane. Thankfully, there are no rap party faux paus like scratch solos in the middle of your favorite track, or electro house masquerading as R&B.

Some people live around the corner and stumble in just before it gets too busy, while other groups travel for over an hour, getting there when the doors open, and are the last to leave. Also present: an average of 50 tourists who can't believe they're hearing rap like this at an Australian club.

If hearing 400 songs in a night that feature a DJ Khaled intro is your type of party, Halfway Crooks is truly "da best" down under. It might not be a rave in the untz-untz-lasers-molly-utnz-untz sense, but the vibe is very #plur. In five years, there's never been a fight—not even during a Brick Squad medley.

UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT: "We had two chef mates whose restaurant was up the road, so for about a year they would rock up to the party with a huge bag of chicken wings which we'd pass out into the crowd. So there would be a full dance floor with a foil package of wings crowdsurfing over the top of everyone."
