Aussie Producer Mr. Bill Is Releasing Tracks With a New Comic Series

The collaborative visual series with Funilab is not just a creative storytelling tool, but also a statement about the current model of digital music production.

Aussie producer Mr. Bill has teamed up with British visual artist Funilab for a novel approach to releasing music: an ongoing comic series. Corrective Scene Surgery is a visual and audio series that combines originals, collabs and remixes from Mr. Bill with black-and-white, futuristic artwork from Funilab. Each track will be accompanied by a specific piece of art that represents a different story arc in the comic book.

The series—to be released single by single—has no thematic progression, rejecting the current concept-driven process by which music is produced and thereby serving as a statement about the current model of digital music production.

We're premiering the newest chapter from the comic series—coined "Harmonica Lewinsky," the track is a trippy five-minute tumble down the alien planet of dubstep and trance, paired up with an equally trippy minimalistic art piece.

"I basically got sick of releasing albums, EP's, and singles in the 'traditional' sense," Mr. Bill told us over email. "I tend to start songs, work on them as I feel inspired, and then save the work in progress; I'll then jump between the many WIP's I've begun depending on what I feel moved by at the time."

The Corrective Scene Surgery project allowed him to continue producing new works "instead of just leaving various completed songs unreleased until" he could "reach a 'concept' to build an album off of." Funi's artwork gives structure to the conflicting directions of the tracks, linking remixes and originals into a coherent record.

Waiter, There's a Bassline in My Soup

Mr. Bill said that the project is very open-ended and "could last for years," ending up "with 500 tunes, and 500 pages of a comic book."

"I've set-up a page on my website where people can get the project file & stems for the tune," he added. "There's 60 hours worth of footage of myself and Dylan (ill.Gates) writing the track."

"Harmonica Lewinsky" can be downloaded on Bandcamp.
