Cashmere Cat's Single With the Weeknd is a Windswept Ode to a "Wild Love"

Since his last solo EP in 2014, Norwegian futurist Cashmere Cat has become a secret weapon for pop stars looking for something a little left-of-center in their electronic productions. That's meant he's turned in bioluminescent instrumentals for the likes of Ariana Grande, Charli XCX, Tinashe, and even a couple of assists on Kanye West's collaboration-happy Life of Pablo earlier this year. Today he's back with another solo single that enlists some of the A-list talent he's become used to working with.

"Wild Love" features the Weeknd and Francis and the Lights (a frequent Chance the Rapper collaborator). Even more so than his recent single "Adore" with Grande, it demonstrates his great skill as a producer, the ability to bring diverse talents into his own weird and windswept world. The sort of autotuned chorale that's become Bon Iver's signature over the last half decade opens the track, but even as the Weeknd slinks his way through the track, Cashmere Cat carefully creates a downcast world of jittery blips and booming synth bass that could only belong to him. It's moody, swirling, and beatless—a strangely crestfallen moment for the man born Magnus Høiberg. But that's the way love goes sometimes isn't it?
