Coone is Hardstyle 4 Lyfe

Dim Mak's Belgian baby face likes big kicks and big boobs.

We predict that hardstyle is going to take over America in 2014. Who can resist those monster kickdrums and psychotic drops? It is truly the ragiest, mouth-frothingest EDM genre around. In anticipation of Dutch hard dance brand Q-Dance touching down in the USA with their Sound of Q-Dance event (October 5 at the Shrine in Los Angeles), we're profiling some of the biggest DJs playing at the fest. Now when your friends ask you six months from now if you've heard of Headhunterz or Psyko Punkz you can be all, "Duh. Who hasn't?"

Belgium's dude Coone is a whopping 30 years old but you wouldn't know it by looking at his baby face. (Apparently, all that straight-from-the-farm-non-GMO dairy does a DJ good.) Since 2006, Coone—whose name is a phonetic spelling of his real name, Koen Bauweraerts—has run the Dirty Workz label, nurturing up-and-coming hardstyle and jumpstyle artists while releasing a volley of straight-up bangers from the likes of Psyko Punkz, Deepak, and Fenix. As for his own music, he plays a very melodic, accessible, and hard-trancey kind of sound—no wonder he's been called in to work with headliners Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike (and Lil Jon) and also is the first hardstyle artist signed to Steve Aoki's Dim Mak label for an album, Global Dedication, which comes out soon. (Listen to the first single here.)

We caught up with Coone and he told us how to pick up Belgian girls and unlocking emotions through heavy-ass kicks. (After you read this, we highly suggest you school yourself on jumpstyle vs. hardstyle dancing via this video.)

When you were 10 years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Sorry for the cheesy answer, but I knew back then I wanted to be a DJ. I Also wanted to become an actor or singer, but I have a terrible voice.

Teach us a phrase in your native language and tell us what it means?
Dikke tetten. You say this to a girl that looks pretty. [Ed: It means "big boobs."]

How did you choose your DJ name?
My real name is Koen, so it is just spelled different.

Where did you grow up and what is it like?
I grew up in a town in Belgium called Turnhout aka T-wood! It's near the Dutch border, where hardstyle was invented. This is where I grew up and still live at the moment.

Who is the best cartoon character of all time and why?
Homer Simpson, because he reminds me of my dad.

What is your favorite quality in a raver girl?
I really love the way they dress up. I have never had bad experiences with them.

What are you going to be for Halloween?
I just finished a new track named "Zombie Killer," so I think a zombie killer would be suitable for this year.

If someone never heard hardstyle before, what track would you recommend they listen to and why?
Coone "Times Gettin' Hard." This track tells a story and unlocks emotions, combined with euphoric melodies and, of course, banging hardstyle kicks.

What is the scariest thing you've seen at a hardstyle rave?
A well-known hardstyle DJ who spontaneously jumped into the crowd… and no one caught him.

There are a lot of brands in the hardstyle space. What is Q-Dance known for?
Q stands for quality in everything they do. It's always a breathtaking show. They always are innovating to keep the events interesting and surprising for their visitors.

Are you ever simply just too tired to be hardstyle?
No! I love music with balls. The energy and euphoric vibe will never be tiring.

What's your best dance move?
Fist-pumping… and I am good at it.

What's the one thing you are really excited to do while you are in California for Q-Dance?
My main goal is to reach the audience with my sound and make it an unforgettable night, so I can come back as soon as possible.
