Junior Boys Share VHS Fantasy Video For 'Over It,' Announce Tour Dates With Jessy Lanza

A local, bar-frequenting "eccentric" from Ontario makes a very special guest appearance in this charming clip.

Canadian electro pop veterans, Junior Boys, are gearing up for a new album, entitled Big Black Coat. What will be their fifth full-length is set to be their first for UK label City Slang, marking something of a comeback insofar as it's their first LP since 2011's It's All True.

We've previously heard Hyperdub artist, Ikonika, refashion their single "Over It" into a moody slow jam, and now the delightfully catchy original has its own video. Directed by Canadian filmmaker, Lee Skinner, it starts with a lone bearded figure sitting in silence in a bar, then seems to travel into his VHS-styled fantasy of "directing" of a Junior Boys video. It's all fittingly outfitted with kitschy green screen effects and low budget charm.

In a previous THUMP interview, the band said that the song is about a "local eccentric" who frequents The Brain, a bar in Hamilton, Ontario co-owned by band member Jeremy Greenspan. It doesn't seem like too much of a stretch to suggest that the video's star might just be that man himself, perhaps pictured in that very bar—a well-earned cameo, if so.

The synth pop duo also has a good deal of forthcoming tour dates lined up with fellow Canadian artist Jessy Lanza—whose debut album Greenspan produced—and you can check those out below. Revisit our recent interview with Jeremy Greenspan here, where he talks about how techno nostalgia and small-town drunks influenced the new album.
