Mum Dance: I Asked My Mum To Review The Month's Best New Tracks

"This is everything I hate."

Mum Dance is a new column on THUMP UK where our lads over the pong make their mother's listen to their favorite tracks of recent weeks, and ask them to text their response. This months mother-in-resident is THUMP UK staff writer Angus' mum.

My mum and I share a fair bit of common ground when it comes to music. From sitting in the back of the car aged 4, bopping my head along to Donovan's "Mellow Yellow", we've always known there is a load of stuff we can listen to and enjoy together just fine. Sadly, this doesn't include any of the music I write about. My mum's usual response to anything bassy, or techy, or otherwise pummelling is to either find it incessantly repetitive or at worst intimidating. I get it, she grew up on Herman's Hermit's, and now I'm playing her Boys Noize compilations.

That being said, she is also very opened minded, so when I asked if she fancied launching our new monthly track review, she leapt at the chance.

Lakker - "Milch"

WE SAID
After a gorgeous, eerie, icy introduction, "Milch" begins ripping along with a muted intensity. It's classic R&S fare, from the Irish duo still riding off the acclaim of their recently released album Tundra. YES, technically this one didn't come out this month, but it's enjoyed a lot of remixes and some serious recirculation on Soundcloud this month — plus I really wanted my mum to hear this one.

MUM SAID

Rustie - "Big Catzz"

WE SAID

This is so huge. An initial fill that lands somewhere between a war march and rocket launch. Then a set of gooey, hyper-real synths, before absolute mayhem ensues.

MUM SAID

DJ Haus - "Hot In Dis MuthaFucka"

WE SAID
We premiered the video for this one not too long ago, and it is still an absolute screamer. I hate relying on words like "screamer", but this one just is. It is steamy, sweaty, with merciless groove.

MUM SAID

Jamie xx - "Loud Places (John Talabot Remix)

WE SAID

It is possible we might be reaching a point where we've heard every track from Jamie xx's

In Colour

so many times, they are starting to disappear into the background a little bit. Pretty refreshing then to hear Spanish selector, and producer of inimitably growing and glowing house, John Talabot's delicate and blushing spin on the album's lead track.

Baba Stiltz - "Born2Live"

Baba Stiltz - "Born2Live"

WE SAID
We only premiered this one a few days ago, but we are already an editorial team obsessed. While "Born2Live" starts pretty crunchy, these unbelievable stabbing and jabbing chords start crawling out of the woodwork, making for a club jam that's as interesting as it is dance-able.
