Gorillaz Reveal That Sade and Morrissey Declined to Work With Them

They've also announced that they're making a 10-episode TV show.

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett's cartoon band Gorillaz revealed in an interview with Q (via  Pitchfork) that legendary English musicians Sade and Morrissey turned down requests to collaborate on the project's upcoming LP Humanz. They also announced that they have a TV series in the works, and that a collaborative feature-length film with Dreamworks never ended up happening because "it was too dark to spend a couple of hundred million dollars on."

Albarn also talked about how the world's political situation influenced Humanz. "I told everyone to imagine you're in America after the inauguration, and it's the worst-case scenario: how would you feel that night? Let's make a party record about the world going fucking nuts," he said. Recent "Let Me Out" collaborator Pusha T confirmed that Albarn requested this envisioning from him in a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1.

"Humanz is not a political statement about Trump—it's about a world in which he could get elected," added Hewlett. "Where are we as a race? Why haven't we grown out of this? Putting the Z on the end is not a hip-hop statement, it's more like an android Z. Are we human beings or just humanz? What the fuck is wrong with us?"

The Gorillaz founders said Morrissey turned them down after a "month long email exchange." Meanwhile, Albarn also said that his project The Good, the Bad & the Queen have been at work on a new LP for three years.

Gorillaz' interview with Q will be on newsstands tomorrow, April 11.
