Governors Ball Fights Back Against NYC Coachella

Governors Ball is mad as hell and isn't going to take it anymore.

Governors Ball is mad as hell and isn't going to take it anymore. Several weeks ago we reported that AEG, the company responsible for Goldenvoice and Coachella, were looking into launching a New York festival in 2016 titled Panorama. The event would compete directly with Governor's Ball, taking place only two weeks after the New York institution in June.

"The timing of this corporate-run festival would threaten our ability as a small business to continue putting on the kind of event that has showcased the best artists, created hundreds of local jobs and put millions of dollars back into the city's economy," said Tom Russell of Founder's Entertainment, which puts on Governors Ball, in an interview with the New York Daily News.

Now, a petition has appeared on Change.org urging the city to take action. The petition comes with a letter signed by "Team Gov Ball" which accuses AEG of strong-arm business tactics. "As a small, independent company in an industry dominated by major corporations and rapid consolidation, we've come a long way and given hundreds of thousands of you first class entertainment," observes the petition. "Sadly, today our future is in jeopardy and we need your help… The timing of [AEG's] proposed event is an aggressive, greedy attempt by AEG to push a small independent company of born and bred New Yorkers out of business and out of the market."

What they're asking isn't for DeBlasio to deny AEG's proposal outright—rather, they only want him to change the date to put more space between their events. "We are asking that this proposed event take place at another time of year because this would allow both events to succeed."

At the time of publication, the petition had 6,694 supporters. Read the full text here.
