THUMP Brazil Is Celebrating Carnival This Year by Taking Over Beats 1

Our new four-part series on Apple Music explores the history of samba, marchinha, and more.

Brazil's annual celebration of music and excess is fast approaching. To mark this year's Carnival season, THUMP Brazil is excited to announce that we will be taking over Beats 1 for the next four Saturdays to explore how music and dance are interconnected with the festival's history and legacy in Brazil.

Each episode will showcase a different theme, starting with samba and marchinhas this Saturday at 11 am PST. The second week, we'll bring you the best of the Carnival tradition in Bahia—a state in Brazil's Northeast—showcasing local innovators Dodô and Osmar, legendary songwriter Caetano Veloso, the African-Brazilian percussion ensemble Olodum, and contemporary Axégroup Banda Vingadora. From there we'll take a look at the samba parades in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, before wrapping it all up with an episode on Bahia Bass and the genre's grandmaster, Mauro Telefunksoul.

Listen to our first broadcast on Saturday, February 6th at 11AM PST with a rerun on Sunday at 6AM PST. Apple Music subscribers will be able to stream the show on demand after it airs. Enjoy Carnival!
