Is This the End of New Outdoor Clubs in Parts of Ibiza?

Council members in the San Antonio region of Ibiza voted and unanimously passed legislation that would ban the construction of new beach clubs and outdoor hotel venues. The new restriction would reportedly stop, "new residential facilities with secondary musical activity and new open-air establishments with musical activity, known as beach clubs" from being built.

The vote is the first step in initiating the ban. Ibiza's central governing body would need to ratify the law for it to entirely go into effect.

According to reports from Mixmag and Diario De Ibiza, the noise and disruption of the open-air venues has been a major concern for locals. Juanjo Ferrer, the councilor for San Antonio's Town Planning and Activities, said music within the area is now ubiquitous.

"Music playing at any time of day around every corner, both in urban areas and natural ones," Ferrer began. "There are beaches that have become chill-out areas with DJs, restaurants whose menus offer techno sets, hotels that have been converted into open-air clubs, etc."

New laws and regulations have also reportedly allowed for tourist establishments to expand their reach and welcome new "secondary activities" like the ones mentioned above.

This would not be the first time such a ban was put in place. Santa Eulària, a municipality in Ibiza, passed a similar ban in 2013. In July, Vincente Torres, the director of Ibiza's Department of Tourism, said the island has a limited capacity and cannot sustain increases in tourism.
