Kunst Sound the Drums of Death in Spectral New Track, “Spep”

The duo offer a taste of their forthcoming self-titled album.

Ever attended a concert inside an abandoned, haunted church? The latest track from UK duo Kunst (a.k.a. dgoHn and J.K.) sounds pretty close to it.

The pair are presenting their first-ever collaboration in the form of a self-titled album, due out April 28 on their eponymous label. Ahead of the release, they are sharing one of the LP's tracks, "Spep," an eerie track swirling with spectral atmosphere around live drums and solemn bells. If the album were an actual concert inside a ghoul-ridden church, this track would be akin to a mellow, jam session-like interlude, each strike of the bell ringing through the hall and sprinkling centuries-old dust off the ceiling.

Over email, dgoHn tells THUMP of the track: "Like most of the tunes on this album, 'Spep' was made through Jodey and I swapping ideas and audio files via the Internet—we met up occasionally to discuss where we wanted to go with the sounds and such, but most of the actual work was done individually and sent from one of us to the other to be added to, touched up or finished. There is no real story to 'Spep' or any of the other tunes on the album— they all started as ideas we had as individuals, and grew as one or both of us added to them, almost similar to an exquisite corpse-type thing…"
