We talked to the boss of Midgar Records-Jacopo Severitano-about his Berlin-based label and latest signing, the Maltese techno figure Cloned, from whom you can stream six thick techno tracks above. (The final track "Corel" is also yours to download.)THUMP: What is the sound that Midgar stands for?
Jacopo:We release tracks on Midgar with a storytelling approach. Each EP-usually consisting of four to five tracks written by a single artist-can be seen as a chapter for the label, which will grow together with its artists.Is Berlin the epicenter of techno?
At the moment, probably. But as an artist or label based here, that doesn't mean that everything is easier. The competition is fierce here, making it a challenge to stand out. Though it's true that you're more likely to develop your career in music here than in other countries.Which other labels inspire you most?
Definitely ambient and deep techno-oriented labels like Spectrum Spools, Further Records, Northern Electronics, Prologue and Dement3d. But I would also add Dekmantel, Inimeg and L.A.G. The list is quite long.Who is Cloned?
Cloned is a young and extremely talented producer/live performer from Malta. Synthek, my friend and partner at Natch Records, introduced me to him. Cloned in my opinion has a lot of potential, which is clearly evident on his Sapphire 1990 EP. We'll probably work again in the future.What does the future have in store for Midgar?
The First Midgar Records Showcase takes place on February 22 in Naples, with Wata Igarashi playing live, Ruhig, and myself.
