London Could Be Getting a Night Mayor

Hopefully one that doesn't rugby tackle Japanese children though.

In a report published this morning, the Mayor's Music Venues Taskforce has suggested London would benefit from a "nighttime economy champion", similar to the Night Mayor role that already exists in the Netherlands. The report, London's Grassroots Music Venue Rescue Plan, puts forward a number of actions for the improvement and preservation of London's nighttime culture but the suggestion of the Night Mayor is certainly the most intriguing proposal.

According to the report, London's Night Mayor will "bring together businesses, residents, local authorities, transport, police and emergency services to build positive relationships, review policies and maximise the potential of a sector that in the UK is worth £66 billion a year." Other suggestions include the establishment of a London Music Development Board in order to draw together the expertise of the music industry, police, licensing boards, planning departments and transports authorities, and plans set out in order to facilitate the opening of new music venues.

London's nighttime economy has suffered greatly in recent years, with some figures suggesting the UK was losing interest in night clubs altogether. The suggestions outlined in todays report do show positive signs in theory, however they are still suggestions being made to local and national governments that have so far been less than supportive. What remains to be seen is whether these proposals will come anywhere close to a reality.
