Moodymann Is Headlining a Party To Support Flint's Water Crisis

Dozens of Detroit techno and house DJs join together to help support the neighboring city in dire straits.

As Flint's water disaster drags on, the residents of the city about an hour north of Detroit still need support, even as the media's attention threatens to turn elsewhere. That's one of the reasons why Detroit's techno community is coming together at TV Bar on March 11 with a massive homegrown event, headlined by Moodymann, that will help maintain awareness, and provide additional resource support for the community in continuing crisis.

"Sometimes when you are a musician, its hard to ask yourself 'What am I doing to make this a better world?' This is it," Detroit producer Kevin Reynolds told THUMP about his decision to join the lineup of over 30 DJs, live performers, singers and poets. "They say Detroit is the canary in the coal mine. Well I'll tell you, Flint is the Big Bird, 80-feet-tall, bending down and staring at you in your eye."

Reynolds will be joined by a massive lineup of local talent coming from a variety of generations and cliques within the city's dance music scene. Veteran mixers from the first wave of techno, DJ Minx, D. Wynn, Rick Wilhite and Keith Worthy will share the stage with some of the city's 90s rave alum, Eric Hinchman, Chuck Flask and Detroit Techno Militia. The new generation is repped by The Saunderson Brothers, Damarii and Dantiez, the two sons of Detroit techno originator Kevin Saunderson—who'll also contribute his own time to the cause by serving as a guest bartender for the event.

"It's great to see such a varied group of Detroit people coming together to support our neighbors," adds DJ Mike Petrack, whose How To Kill imprint is one of the city's latest labels to watch. "Our scene is growing again and its things like this that create a lasting impact on people beyond just music for them to dance to."
