Stream Rockwell's Genre-Busting Insta-classic "INeedU"

Drum and bass, acid house, disco and footwork -- All in one absolute CHOON.

Shogun Audio's Rockwell has fast developed a reputation for pushing things forward both in terms of technique and concept. His tune "Detroit" last year tore up dancefloors by bringing together drum n' bass, techno, and footwork in a totally unheard of manner.

The bespectacled maestro is back with "INeedU" and "1_2_3_4," two tracks that show off his versatility. "INeedU," in particular, is an undeniably awesome clusterfuck of genres, and we've got the exclusive online premiere (we even beat out the BBC on this one). In Rockwell's words: "The track is a weird mix of house, drum and bass, disco and maybe a sprinkling of footwork at 172bpm. It's inspired by listening to strange old mixtapes where records were played at 45 when they were cut at 33rpm."

The tune is a departure from Rockwell's signature techy and brooding sound. "It's been interesting to see people's reactions," he tells THUMP. "It's definitely a bit of a 'happier' tune than I've been known for recently, but you can't be angry all the time, right?"

Rockwell's flair for sound design is immediately apparent. "To be honest this was one of the quicker ones, and probably took me a good three to four weeks," he explains. "I probably spend a lot more time than other people on my tracks, and probably more time than I should. The main ideas and vibes tend to be written in a few days but then executing the idea into a workable piece of music is what takes the time."

Okay let's get to the real hard-hitting question: Does he ever get mistaken for Thom Yorke or his better looking brother Jhon? "No," says Rockwell. "But we both have great cheekbones. I get called T-1000 a lot for obvious reasons, especially on the Internet."
