The Editors' New Groove Vol. XII

Don't get caught sleeping on these newbies from Claptone, AraabMUZIK, Martyn and more.

The Editors' New Groove is a weekly pow-wow on the freshest new releases from THUMP's editors and regular contributors' radars.

Illum Sphere feat. Shadowbox - "Embryonic"
Illum Sphere seems like the type of dude who would show up to your techno party, rip the needle off the record, and put on a McCoy Tyner B-side. Anyways I'd like to take this opportunity to announce, before everyone else, that the dude's forthcoming album on Ninjatune is going to be one of the biggest records of 2014. (Max Pearl)

Outta Sight (Freddie Joachim Remix)
My buddy slid me this flip of the classic Stevie Wonder song, "Uptight (Everything's Alright)," a few months ago and it's been on repeat ever since. I can't wait to get my hands on the 7". If this doesn't make you feel good, everything is not alright. (Joel Fowler)

A. G. Cook - Keri Baby feat. Hannah Diamond
Springing forth from a place where sparkle ponies roam free, this sugar-coated dose of Tumblr pop is better than listening to Britney Spears on ketamine. Will you braid my hair? (Michelle Lhooq)

DKDS - "Coast 2 Coast"
This new heater from Trouble & Bass bad boiis DKDS is about an 11 on the dirty scale and has a bassline that drives considerably better than J.Biebs. Sorry brah. (David Garber)

Martyn - "Vancouver (Head High Remix)"
Hiring Shed to remix one of Martyn's tracks is like drafting Genghis Khan to lead a squadron of Maasai warriors for a battle against a troop of kindergarteners: it's awesomeness is redundant and gratuitous. (Elissa Stolman)

AraabMUZIK - "Ghost Story"

AraabMUZIK has been killing it, dropping a new track every week as part of his "AraabMUZIK Mondays" shtick. Even a hail of bullets can't stop the homie! This prime cut, recently liberated from Spotify, shows his more reflective side—the man's more than just bangers. He takes trance vocalist Jes Brieden's lyrics from "Ghost" and replaces the tech house of Deepsky for his own cloudy, ephemeral rap beat. Spark one. (Mike Steyels)

Jubilee - "I-95"
One time I was visiting my grandparents in Boca Raton, Florida and I rented a little Hyundai or something so I could go drive around Miami. And there I was cruising down I-95 with a fifth of Malibu when I started seeing signs for Route 808. I figured this was a good omen, so I put on a Jubilee mixtape, rolled down the windows, and pulled off to see where this road might take me. I ended up at my friend's house lighting fireworks off a corrugated tin roof in Little Haiti. Fuck, Miami's crazy. (Max Pearl)

Crackazat - "Dancrodile"

New from Crackazat in Uppsala Sweden, this slice of "sushi house"—you know, the kind of house music you hear only at sushi restaurants—goes down smooth. (Joel Fowler)

Claptone - "Control"

Imagine how cool it would be to see the bird mask-wearing DJ Claptone perform at one of those masquerade balls from the 15th century. What kind of music even popped off at those things? Anyways, this funky rework of "Walk On The Wild Side" is a fitting ode to Lou Reed. (David Garber)

Haf Haf - "Ode to u19"

After spending several consecutive hours binging on DJ tool techno releases and retro house cuts, every beat starts to blend together. In those moments, tracks like Haf Haf's "Ode To U19" are a breath of fresh air. (Elissa Stolman)

Swappi 4D - "Three"

Soca for the mosh pit? I'm down lol. What else can you do when that Godzilla horn drops, other than jump around into other people? (I'm using "mosh" liberally, I know how you hardcore types be.) Swappi is one of Trinidad's biggest stars, but readers of THUMP would probably care more about the producer, a Mad Decent/Jefferies artist named London Future. I guess the future of London Town is ATL flavored soca. (Mike Steyels)

Worthy - "Get It"

Worthy might look like just another tribal-print tracksuit-wearing electro-bro, but his brand of cheeky house is anything but brainless. (Michelle Lhooq)
