Carl Craig Fuses Techno and Classical Music in New Album, ‘Versus’

"'Versus' is my desire and dream come true to have my music interpreted by an orchestra.”

Detroit techno heavyweight Carl Craig has announced a new album, Versus, in which music from his catalog will be recreated with the help of an orchestra.

The eight-track LP is due out March 2017 via labels Planet E and InFiné. The tracklist is presently unknown, though orchestral versions of Craig tracks "Sandstorms" and "Desire" were played earlier this week on Benji B's BBC Radio 1 show. (Listen to those here.) In a press release, Craig said: "Versus is my desire and dream come true to have my music interpreted by an orchestra."

According to a press release, the Versus concept was conceived nearly a decade ago with its 2008 live debut at La Cité de La Musique, Paris in what was one of the first performances to combine electronic and classical composition. Craig worked with the Les Siècles orchestra, conducted by François-Xavier Roth; German producer and multi-instrumentalist producer Moritz von Oswald; and pianist Francesco Tristano. A live show, titled the Versus Synthesizer Ensemble, is also scheduled for 2017, with the first dates being announced in January.
