Earlier this year, Half Waif releaseda murky gem of an EP called form/a. Nandi Rose Plunkett has been recording under the name for a while—and also plays in Pinegrove, the hyperliterate New Jerseyan rock band—but that release represented a newly complex side to her synth-driven sound. Her vocal melodies were sunny, but deceptively contorted, warping around luminescent keyboard lines and percussion. Its best moments felt as comforting as a spring day in the sunshine, but it was subtly unsettling, as if the whole thing were rendered in glitchy VR.Today, the ambient composer Steve Hauschildt has taken one of the tracks from that release and pushed it to even more abstract and sublime realms. The original "Severed Logic" is a dizzy ballad, but Hauschildt cloaks it in gaseous pastels—turning the synth lines into bubbling melodies, and her voice into a distant chorale. If the original renders its emotional distress in hyperrealist 4K, the remix is an expressionist reworking—with violent streaks of color as stand-ins for form and action.
