Brooklyn's Duo Earth Boys' New Record Is a Mixed Bag of Heady House Vibes

Stream 'Trail Mix' now along with a chat with Public Release label owner Eug.

Despite being named Earth Boys, Brooklyn natives Julian Duron and Michael Sherburn release a lot of otherworldly electronics into the world. Whether performing as part off freakout live techno outfit DUST, crafting deep and hazy house tracks on labels like 1080p and Mike Simonetti's 2MR, or just crushing the dancefloor at local haunt Bossa Nova Civic Club, the duo's always up for change and experimentation. Their next project, a four-track EP, lands on San Francisco label Public Release. Through two sides of the disc, entitled Trail Mix, the duo bags up an assortment of wonky sounds—cheeky vocal samples set amidst tribal tones, deep rhythmic rumblings, and bright piano lines that makes sure the entire package stays properly levitated throughout. Along with a full stream of the records, we caught up with Public Release label owner and DJ Eug below.

THUMP: Public Release is based in San Francisco and this record come all the way from Brooklyn. Can you tell me a bit about the connection—both now and historically—between the two city's scenes and musical styles?
Eug: The label is international, we've released with artists from all over the UK, France, Japan, etc. so the Brooklyn connection isn't a stretch. Our party FACE in SF, has had a long running relationship with the New York scene, whether it be what Earth Boys have been up to, or long before that with guys like Tim Sweeney, Eric Duncan, Justin Van Der Volgen, and Jacques Renault regularly playing our parties and vice versa. We're one big happy global family.

The press release talks about the record having an ironic sense of humor intersected with the more dance-driven energy. How important is a little lightheartedness in dance music?
We take partying and dance music quite seriously, however humor is absolutely essential in reminding ourselves that the goal is, and always has been about having a good time.

What else has been going on at the label that you're excited about?
Lots of exciting stuff coming up! We've got a kraut-y experimental EP by SF band Eye-O, Dennis McNany aka Jee Day has a killer 12" almost done, and actually we're following up this Earth Boys release, with a remix 12" from T&P (Tim Sweeney and Lauer), who will debut their first remix ever. Khotin from Vancouver will be on there, as well as Mike Simonetti. Some serious heat.

Finally, what's your favorite style of trail mix?
Psychedelic.
