Radio France, the country's largest public radio station, has been acquiring electronic music records since the 1960s. Now it plans to dig into its archive to sell some of those records in a public auction.

According to the French music website Trax magazine, Radio France is selling over 4,000 records from its vast collection (almost 450,000 vinyl strong). Most of the records in the sale are electronic music-based, including some that date back to the 1960s.

The purpose of the sale isn't just to purge Radio France of redundancies in its vintage records (only records of which they have doubles will be sold), but to also begin digitally cataloging these records that until now, have only been available in physical form. By giving these records a digital platform they will be made available for distribution on various streaming services.

Marc Maret, Radio France's Deputy Director of Documentation said to the Trax: "This is not a dead collection, but one that is alive and well and used every day. Now it will be affiliated to music platforms that allows for its distribution."

The auction will take place at the Maison de la Radio in Paris on June 19.
