Simian Mobile Disco Announces New Album and Live Setup

'Whorl' is due out September 9.

Simian Mobile Disco is certainly living up to its name. In April, the London-based duo comprised of James Ford and Jas Shaw took their hardware on their road and trekked down to the Southern California desert to jam for three days. The sessions became the raw material for the pair's next LP, Whorl, which is due out September 9 on Anti Records. But Whorl is more than an album—it's also the title and concept of SMD's latest live show setup, in which the two will recreate the recording process at every gig. So far, they've only performed Whorl twice—first, to a sold-out 900-person crowd in Pioneertown, and then last weekend at Sonar—but there are more on the horizon. The gigs incorporate a bespoke hardware system created by SMD's art/video collaborators Jack Featherstone and Hans Lo that generates trippy live visuals, which you can get a feel for by peeping the album art above or watching the Whorl trailer below. The clip is set to "Tangents," a cut from the album that drops as a single on June 30.
