The independent electronic label Ghostly International has announced NoGeo, the solo debut of Teengirl Fantasy's Logan Takahashi. Don't, however, expect a new Teengirl Fantasy album here: in a break with the lustrous sounds that he has created with the acclaimed production duo, Takahashi uses NoGeo to explore his minimal side.

Armed with an Elektron Monomachine, a library of samples, and an aesthetic sensibility shaped as much by family history and personal experiences as by late 80s video games and Brooklyn electronic music, Takahashi has crafted NoGeo (a pun on the 80s arcade game manufacturer Neo Geo) into a poem-like dance album. On its first single "Cella," Takahashi intertwines the subterranean soundtrack of a Nintendo adventure game with samples of a classical Indian singer, and the ever-present bump of a bass drum, to conjure the image of a weary warrior with the weight of a quest upon his or her shoulders. Listen to it below.

NoGeo is out with Ghostly International on April 15, 2016.

Correction, February 29, 5:54: A previous version of this article stated the the title was a reference to the 80s arcade system Neo Geo. It is instead a reference to the 1987 album by Ryuichi Sakamoto. The article also stated that the vocal sample was Indian in origin. It is instead taken from a recording of a Romanian folk song.
