For 12 years, Southern California promoter provocateurs The DoLaB have been the wild sibling of the Coachella festival, sharing the same home on the polo grounds, but doing their own thing, even amidst the festival's massive growth. To that end, the organizers have opted to program two distinct weekends of musical wonder, even while the rest of the fest duplicates it's Weekend 1 and Weekend 2 roster.
The 2016 selection of selector hits on all ends of the electronic music spectrum, from house and techno stars like Lee Foss and Sacha Robotti, bass nation denizens Stanton Warriors, Paper Diamond, Ghastly and PANTyRAiD, drum & bass staple Kraddy, indie-electro acts like HUMANS and Hotel Garuda, and even a beatboxer, Nico Luminous. One notable name absent from the line-up is Lucent Dossier Experience, the Cirque du Soleil-meets-Burning Man performance troop that has been a a fixture at The DoLaB since 2006 (sans 2014 when the group got its own slot on one of the primary festival tents).
Like last year, the lineup also leaves room for surprise sets, the likes of which were filled in 2015 by Chet Faker b2b Bonobo. There was also the matter of EDM superstar Kaskade promising an unannounced appearance until being forced to cancel when organizers discovered just how large the DJ's draw really was, citing completely reasonable concerns of overcrowding and public safety.
This basic consideration of size came even after the 2014 move that relocated the fest within a fest from its longtime mid-field station to its own unique world on the outer edge of the festival grounds, making the DoLaB more of a destination than a pass-through. It also helped with some serious sound bleed issues and allowed The DoLaB to establish more of its own style, the result of which is the massive Big Fish dance arena that surrounds the crowd on all sides and from above, making an immersive experience. And as fans of hot people, hotter sun, and water misters will attest, the DoLab is an easy place to let hours evaporate all Coachella weekend.
Check out the wet and wild vibes from last year's DoLaB recap video, and peep below to get the full line-up for each Coachella weekend. Now we just need to know who will be manning the Despacio soundsystem being elusively advanced as "All Weekend Long" on the Coachella line-up poster.
