The Editors' New Groove Vol. XIV

New heat from HNNY, Monolake, Jacques Renault, Beaka, and more in this week's edition.

The Editors' New Groove is a weekly pow-wow on the freshest new releases from THUMP's editors and regular contributors' radars.

AxH, "Everdine"
Nice to see a classic dubstep label still fighting the good fight with this new and very dub-minded EP from Boston's AxH. Heavy business to listen to while you screw together your soundsystem speaker stacks. (Vivian Host)

Wen, "Intro (Family)" (Keysound)
"Atmospherics" is a wanky fucking word that writers like to use when they run out of insights to offer about electronic music. I don't even know what this word means, therefore I will not be drawing your attention to any "atmospherics" here, but let's just say this homie's sound design game = three hunna. Check the intro here for Wen's forthcoming release and get FREAKIN' PSYCHED. (Max Pearl)

Max Piff, "Larry David (feat. Yung Jake)"
Max Piff (the "teen heartthrob in residence" from the short-lived but brilliant pseudo-boyband #HDBoyz) teamed up with the internet-famous meta-rapper Yung Jake for this homage to Larry David. Sample line? "I keep it too real… like I'm Larry David." (Michelle Lhooq)

DevelopMENT, "All Night" (Four40)
Cool things happen on the dancefloor when you smash grime bass sounds into house music. Rinse and repeat. (Vivian Host)

Even Tuell, "Digidawn" (Latency)
Every week when it comes time to pick my favorite tracks, I've checked Juno to see if Latency has released Even Tuell's Longing Way EP—and this week the wax is finally available. It's the claps that drive me crazy; I'm a sucker for crisp claps, and this track contains the snappiest claps of them all. They pop up off-time, unexpectedly, as sharp as shards of glass. (Elissa Stolman)

Austin Cesear, "Slink" (Proibito)
First up on Anthony Naples' Probito comes a subby piano jam filtered to perfection. I'm not sure who or where Austin Cesear is but I want to go to there. (Joel Fowler)

HNNY, "Sneeze" (Puss)
In music production and in life, you should never take yourself too seriously. That's not to say that it's acceptable to use the subway as your own possible shit bucket—Yes, I have seen this happen—but if you undo that top button, then you'll probably find yourself in a better state of mind. Unless you live in Brooklyn or are a member of Disclosure or Gorgon City, in which case you should probably keep the top button, done up tight. This wonky beat from HNNY is random, weird, awesome and most importantly, doesn't take itself to seriously. Who has a Kleenex? (David Garber)

Jacques Renault + Mark Verbos, "I Came Back Again" (Bossa Nova Civic Club/Sisterjam)
Subliminal messages are kinda fun. I'm convinced this sordid stunner of a track from Bossa Nova Civic Club's forthcoming compilation is whispering "hide the sausage" into my pliant eardrums. Listen closely and tell me I'm wrong. (Michelle Ong)

General Ludd, "Woo Ha" (Mister Saturday Night)
This tune sounds as if a high school step squad got caught in a polar vortex with a funky-ass rhythm section, and it has me in a better mood than a Cindy Lauper video. Turns out Max already called this one a couple weeks ago but we're re-upping for good measure. (Joel Fowler)

Beaka, "Subconscious" (Infinite Machine)
The latest from Infinite Machine features a super combo of beats, breaks, and bleeps. The whole thing is chunky and poly-rhythmic, and it reminds me of some great early Indigo or Skyence. Subconscious has a particularly awesome frigid majesty, like musically viewing the rings of Titan. (Matt Earp)

Moon Boots, "C.Y.S." (French Express)
This grooving journey from the intergalactic footwear aficionado Moon Boots makes me want to throw on a technicolor jump suit and have my own private dance party on the moon. Hit me up for guest list. No plus ones. (David Garber)

Monolake, "Ritual (Proof of Concept)"
Sound art often pisses me off. A lot of the time, half-cooked ideas with no real substance are used as a justification for an unlistenable piece. But every time I re-listen to the tiny polyrhythms on the preview clips for Monolake's forthcoming Ritual installation at Stony Brook University, I imagine a field of tiny Kodomas , the most adorable imaginary animal ever animated. The only thing cuter than that is the image I see in my mind's eye when I envision David in a technicolor jumpsuit dancing by himself in outer space to a Moon Boots track. (Elissa Stolman)

JoeFarr, "Pocket Face" (HypeLTD)
If all technoz were foods, this techno would be some kind of Soviet cabbage dish—it's simple, it's nutritious, and it emerges from an endless pool of darkness and brutality. (Max Pearl)

David Last, "Embers (feat. Praveen & Benoit)" (Mesa)
David Last's music is so rich and so righteous that it literally makes my heart ache. His latest full length, Early, came out this week on Mesa. Listening to the LP is like having a life-changing religious experience in the middle of the desert, set to deep house. (Matt Earp)
