DJ CQQCHIFRUIT Thinks We're Having a "Disco Moment"

Whether it's for playing out at a club or listening at home, DJs and producers typically have an encyclopedic hoard of music, new and old. In The Last Record, they tell us about the last three songs or albums they've purchased, and why these were important additions to their music collection.

This week, we spoke to Jacquelyn Carmen Guerrero aka CQQCHIFRUIT, a Miami and Chicago-based DJ focusing on tropical, booty, and house. They are the resident DJ and co-founder of TRQPITECA, a nightlife and art event focusing on queer and tropical aesthetics. Here, Guerrero explains why they think we're in "a disco moment."

This song to me is very iconic coming from Miami. I always heard the version by Santana. I never really heard the original version. I was looking for songs that fit into tropical disco or the mixture of salsa and disco. This song came up even though I never really thought of it as disco. I guess it has the roots of it in there. And it also has this really beautiful flute that's really particular to Cuban style. I love it.

Right now, I feel like it's a disco moment. For me and for a lot of people, I think they just need to be uplifted and be able to just dance and have a good time. Especially with the climate that we're in or the moment that we're going through literally today (Inauguration Day).

I think it's a really nice song. It came out recently and [getting it is] a way to stay current. I'm also working on a mix that is for the DePaul Art Museum for an art exhibition about people growing up with AIDS or how AIDS has fit into people's lives. I was looking for artists who either write about that in their music or songs about that or artists are living with HIV/AIDS. This fit well.
