This Indie Rock Outfit Crafted an EP of New Electronic Compositions Using Only Their Debut LP as Source Material

The Brooklyn band Howard are releasing a new EP of original work, but instead of picking back up their guitars, they chose instead to break apart previous material and use the pieces to make new experimental electronic compositions.

The quartet will soon release their Please Recycle EP, a five-track record comprised exclusively of sounds and samples extracted from their 2015 debut LP Religion. Instead of remixing the tracks from that album, which featured more guitar driven indie rock music, the band instead deconstructed those songs down to their stem files (the individual instrument recordings for a track) and sliced and diced them into entirely new works — sometimes breaking down two or three original tracks and rebuilding them one new "recycled" track — that jettison far from their indie roots and fall somewhere between the playfulness of glitch and the gentleness of electrofolk.

"While sound is the primary vehicle for Please Recycle," the band said in a released statement, "it is more than just a musical concept. It is a critique on the ability of modern technology to re-purpose and re-use the abundance of existing material, leaving the listener to ponder the reason for ever producing more."

Please Recycle will be released with Fashion People on March 25. Check out the recycling-themed tracklist and single "Glass" below.
