Crate Expectations: HeRobust

The ATL bass slanger comes clean on his collection.

What's the first song you ever loved?
That's easy, but this is a weird answer. I actually developed my passion for music through playing video games. The theme songs for different levels and bosses were always awesome to me. My favorite was theToejam and Earl theme song. That was actually the VERY first thing I learned how to play on piano. Video game music just had a whole different sound palette from the stuff I'd hear on the radio back then. I loved it, and I actually suspect that's why our generation is so into electronic music - because we grew up on stuff that.

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?

Black Rob - Like Woah and my very own Snail Gate. Woah indeed…

What song have you had on repeat in the last month?
Aazar - Rundat. Just when you thought soundcloud had becoming a sea of flume clones and trap bootlegs, somebody like this dude comes along and reminds us why we use it to look for tunes in the first place. It's something fucking new and I love it.

Which track of your own do you love the most?

Facebook Lift. It's an old one, but it's the closest I've ever gotten to achieving the balance of jazzy soul and gangster lean that I go for. Luckily, Saturate Records printed the single on vinyl 7' and I'l have that forever.

What track of your own do you hate the most?

Borgore & Carnage - Incredible (Busted by

Herobust

). The remix is cool and I have nothing but love for Borgore and Carnage. However, after seeing the abuse of the Spinnin catalogue by trap producers, it just would have been nice to say that I didn't contribute to that. : \

What track are you most excited to drop in a set?
It's an unreleased track of mine called "Booty Be Like." It's the weirdest and most surprising thing I've made in a while. They're not all positive, but there's a huge range of reactions every time I play it. I think that's important. Im not interested in making predictable originals. Is that an oxy moron? #tybg

What's your favorite track that you wish worked in a set?
Easy. Black Tiger Sex Machine x Snails - Shockwave. No offense to these producers, obviously. I LOVE this song. Originality is what I respond to the most and I know this one's a bit much for people to handle, but I have to play it anyway. There's always a couple people that "get it" and it's worth it just to see their reactions.
What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
B.O.B. & TI - We Still in This Bitch. "They tried to shut us down about an hour ago, but we still in this bitch." Pretty self-explanatory...

What's the last song you want to hear before you die?

Radiohead - Everything in its Right Place. If my whole life was flashing before my eyes and all that, this would be a great soundtrack for it. There's happiness in it. There's sorrow in it. All the while, reassuring vocals put you in a place that's good and centered. Honorable mention goes out to Outkast - Player's Ball though…
