Whether it's for playing out at a club or listening at home, DJs and producers typically have an encyclopedic hoard of music, new and old. In The Last Record, they tell us about the last three songs or albums they've purchased, and why these were important additions to their music collection. This week, we spoke to Caryn Robinson, aka DJ All The Way Kay. You can hear Robinson spin classic Chicago house and disco at Everybody Get Up!, which takes place on the second Saturday of each month at East Room in Chicago. She also plays at Bump and Grindcore: an R&B Sex Jams Dance Party, which takes place on the last Friday of every month at Beauty Bar.
This was an instant, body roll classic last year, but Banks' single was recently blessed and refreshed by C. Breezy and Mr. Trapsoul. If you didn't have this in the mix already, it's now about to be a staple. Songs like this are gravy to grind to on the dance floor.I've been a longtime fan of Jubilee and I love that on this album (After Hours), she incorporates new genres into her production while still maintaining that signature booty bass sound. I'd like to think Chicago had a little influence on "Spa Day" as it definitely has a futuristic footwork feel. "Bass Supply" also has an ill break down.We have a saying in Chicago ("I do what I want") and this track is definitely in my current "I do what I want" rotation. The entire project is raw and real, but also like a redemption for having to listen to DJ Quik real low in my bedroom as a shorty. Some perfectly placed 80s samples and 808 combos are always my favorite. You gotta bump this loud.
